Azlan, representing team MUSASHi Boon Siew Honda Racing, led the field with a time of 01:38.468s followed by PETRONAS Hong Leong Yamaha's Mohd Zamri Baba who was second fastest with 1:38.767s. The two Japanese aces Ryuichi Kiyonari and Katsuaki Fujiwara posted the third and fourth fastest times respectively with 1:38.977s and 1:39.015 whilst Indonesia's M. Fadli rounded up the top-five with 1:39.801s.
A heavy deluge in the early part of the afternoon delayed the start of the second practice. By the time the SuperSports 600cc practice two had started, the rain had stopped, but conditions were still tricky. Katsuaki Fujiwara clocked fastest on the uncertain track surface with 1:39.515, making Azlan Shah, effectively, the fastest SuperSports 600cc rider of the day.
"I went out with the rain tyre for two laps, but came back for a quick change as I found it unsuitable. The track was not fully wet, only patches of standing water. It was tough for all of us to clock in our best times," said Azlan.
